Tigers lose big football fan to cancer
Rich Weber, whose close bond with grandson Tommy Saunders, a Missouri football player, was chronicled in a story in The Kansas City Star during the Tigers' football season, died Friday in Kearney.
Weber had cancer, and he had been told the disease was terminal. But 'Sir Papaw,' as his grandson called him, still traveled to every Missouri football game he could in support of Tommy, a junior starting wide receiver for the No. 4 Tigers in their 12-2 season.
The wish that Weber would live long enough to see Missouri's Cotton Bowl victory over Arkansas on Jan. 1 came true.
'We expected this,' said his wife, Hattie, 'but it was still hard when it happened.'
She said that since her husband's illness had been publicized over the last year that hundreds of cards and letters of support had been received and were very much appreciated.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
